The Beginners Guide to Crystal Healing

Crystal therapy has been practiced for centuries but has recently resurfaced due to it’s mysterious healing properties. A practice followed by civilisation like the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Indian, it has now risen to popularity in the 21st century due to its ability to heal chakra or energy points in the body and relieve anxiety and stress.

Crystals are an established batch of molecules or atoms, formed due to compression of atoms together due to heat and pressure. Due to the unique way they are formed, they release what we call crystal vibrations, which soothe our mind and body. Crystals can be of different types depending the way they are formed and the minerals they consist of. Because of this, each crystal emits and alters different energies.

What is Crystal Therapy?

Crystal therapy is an energy based technique, used to unblock, balance and direct energy in the body. To perform this, you can either wear the crystals in the form of rings, bracelets or necklaces or a client is made to lie down and the crystals are placed around them in a certain pattern.

To understand how crystal therapy works, it’s important to have an understanding chakra.

What is Chakra?

The literal meaning of chakra is “wheel.” They are considered to be spinning wheels of energy located at different points in the body. These are meant to stay “open” and aligned, since they correspond to major nerve bundles and organs, thus affecting our overall physical and mental well being.

Although there are 114 points in our body, the seven in the spine are considered the main chakra points.

These run from sacrum to the crown of the head as follows:

Root Chakra: Located at the base of the spine, it represents stability and security. However, when blocked, it causes physical ailments like arthritis and bladder or colon problems, or feelings of insecurity.

Sacral Chakra: This chakra point is located right above the pubic bones, and if blocked cause physical ailments like lower back pain and impotence. Emotionally, it is connected to self expression and creativity.

Solar Plexus Chakra: Located in the upper abdomen area, this chakra is a source of personal power. If blocked, it can also cause digestive issues like ulcers, eating disorders etc.

Heart Chakra: This chakra is located in the centre of the chest and bridges the upper and lower chakras, unifying our mind, body and spirit. If blocked, it can cause heart problems, asthma and weight issues or give rise to feelings of isolation.

Throat Chakra: As the name suggests, this chakra is located in the throat. It is the source of verbal expression. If blocked, ailments can be noticed in surrounding areas such as teeth, gums etc.

Third Eye Chakra: Also known as the brow chakra, it’s located between the yes on the forehead. A blockage can lead to headaches, eye problems or hearing issues. It also represents our centre of intuition, allowing us to see the bigger picture.

Crown Chakra: It’s located at the very top of the head, and is also called “the thousand petal chakra.” It’s linked to all other chakras in the body. This chakra represents our connection with ourselves and those around us. sacrum to the crown of the head. A person with a blocked crown chakra can experience affects in the brain and nervous system. They also seem narrow minded and stubborn.

How does Crystal Healing Work?

Now that you know what chakra is, we’ll get to how these chakra points are altered and aligned with these crystals.

There is no scientific evidence till date to back the claim that crystals can cure ailments. Their benefits are believed to arise from the placebo effect, an improvement in overall physical and mental health due to psychological factors like expectations or classical conditioning. And while there is no scientific data that shows the results of healing crystals, research has shown that the placebo effect can ease pain, fatigue and even depression.

Crystals absorb, direct and diffuse the energy fields of a body with disrupted chakra flow and return it to its natural state. The appropriate crystals, depending on the specific treatment, are placed around the chakra points. They link the energy fields of our mind and body, and initiate a specific effect on the flow of chakra, energy and emotions. Crystals pointing away from the problem area are said to remove negative energy whereas crystals placed facing inwards increase the flow of energy, recharging the body with subtle energies.

The Benefits of Crystal Healing

Due to differing composition, each crystal will target different chakras in your body. To reap the most benefits, it’s important to identify your immediate health and wellness concerns.

For example, a rose quartz, also known as the stone of love helps the wearer feel less agitated and more open to romantic relationships. On the other hand, a black tourmaline is a protective stone, which blocks any negative energy from entering the wearer’s energy space. An Amethyst can also be your stone of choice if you suffer from insomnia or have trouble getting peaceful sleep. Some stones can also help in breaking habits of addiction or reduce the side effects of drugs and help the body recover from drug therapy.

There are also stones like the clear quartz that can be used even if you don’t suffer from specific ailments. These are great energy conductors and help boost your concentration and intentions while you are meditating.

The best part about crystal healing is that it has no negative effects on the body.
